Eames the Architect and the Painter (film)

Helvetica sparked my interest in design, so I saw Eames the Architect and the Painter. The husband and wife team, Charles (the architect) and Ray (the painter), gained notoriety after designing the Eames Lounge Chair, combining comfort and with the sleek modernist aesthetic and bringing style to mass-reproducable, affordable furniture. I forget the precise words, but I think the gist of a comment in the introduction was that the Eames saw life, design, and art on a continuum. I don’t know too much about the overlap between art and design, but it seems the Eames, in transcending boundaries between high art (Ray began painted with Hans Hoffman’s school) and corporate design (the team worked for large companies such as IBM) and boundaries between mediums, in my opinion, did not dilute their work but invigorated it so that their source of income, artistic work, private space, and daily life were not only integrated but all improved upon one another.

“Never delegate understanding.” Charles Eames, summarizing his top-down creativity and conceptually driven design.

Ray is adorable. I love how she’s always wearing a ribbon in her hair and pearl earrings- keeping it classic in the midst of cutting-edge design.

Believing clothing trends are driven by and embodied in the people wearing them, New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham documents the clothing of New Yorkers on the street. His humble and sunny demeanor resonated with me more than his work per se, and I admire how he approaches fashion not as a materialist but with child-like curiosity as a true lover of beauty.
